Folk Arts Rare Records closing June 29, 2014

Lou Curtiss’ fabled record store Folk Arts Rare Records – where Tom Waits played a couple of live shows in 1973 and 1974 – closes its doors tomorrow, The San Diego Union Tribune reports.

“‘There’s no place better for your ears to eat than Lou and Ginny Curtiss’ Folk Arts’, Waits said Friday, via email, from his Sonoma Valley home. ‘From the Civil War to Moderno, from Beale Street (in Memphis) to Palermo (Italy), Folk Arts is the cupola, the chimney, the porch and the screen door — the soup kitchen for the lonesome traveler. Lou is the (pioneering musicologist Alan) Lomax of my years. Long may he swagger, long may he rule. Farewell, and good luck, Lou.’”

John Hammond about a song Tom Waits wrote for him March 2, 2014

From NPR.org:

The album (John Hammond’s Timeless, ed.) leads off with “No One Can Forgive Me But My Baby,” a song (…) written especially for Hammond by Tom Waits.

“He came to a recording date I was doing in San Francisco in 1992,” Hammond says. “John Lee Hooker had sat in to do a duet with me, and Tom Waits appeared out of nowhere and said, ‘I have a song for you, man.’ It was about 20 minutes long, with everybody in the Bible coming down to the river. I said, ‘Gee, you know, it’s a great song, but I don’t think I could do anything like that.’ He said, ‘Oh, you don’t like that one?’ So he goes into the control room.”

Scarcely 10 minutes later, Hammond says, Waits emerged — with a brand-new song at the ready. Hammond listened, and liked what he heard.

“So I did it,” he says. “He had left by the time we completed it, and so I sent him a cassette of it. And I hadn’t heard from him for a while, so I called — and he had it on his answering machine. I guess he liked it.”

According to Danish newspaper Metroxpress, Tom Waits has pulled out of the Death Car project.

Death Car is (was?) a collaboration between Tom Waits and director Robert Wilson for the Danish Royal Theatre based on the story of Bonnie and Clyde. The play was set to premiere on November 7, 2014 in Copenhagen but now that Tom Waits’ agent has informed that he feels ‘he can not complete the project as planned’ (according to Metroxpress), it is not clear what will happen.

The Smith Center for the Performing Arts (Las Vegas, NV) presents a “re-imagined” production of The Tempest, adapted and directed by Aaron Posner and Teller with music by Tom Waits. There is no indication whether this is new music, but my guess is it will be existing music.

 The show runs April 6-13, 2014 and tickets are on sale as of today.

Another great story discovered by The Mule: photographer Jay Blakesberg talks about shooting Tom Waits.

(…) At this point about 10 minutes of my 30 had passed, and I had not taken a single picture. The publicist who was just as perplexed as I was didn’t know what to do. (…)

(function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = “//connect.facebook.net/en_GB/all.js#xfbml=1”; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs); }(document, ‘script’, ‘facebook-jssdk’));
